Real Virtuality – Augmented Reality in Timber Construction

Gilles Retsin Architecture | Royal Academy, London

As part of the Real Virtuality project, I worked on the design, fabrication, and assembly of a modular timber pavilion, using Augmented Reality (AR) as a hands-on construction tool rather than just for visualization. This project explored computational design, digital fabrication, and AR’s role in adaptable, modular building systems.

  • Design & 3D Modeling: Created digital models for CNC-cut plywood components and coordinated with the structural team.
  • Fabrication & Coordination: Helped organize off-site plywood production and managed student volunteers for assembly prep.
  • On-Site Construction: Led assembly using Microsoft HoloLens and Fologram, guiding placement and connections with real-time AR overlays.

This project demonstrated AR’s potential to connect digital design with physical construction, making assembly more intuitive and adaptable.
